Kodokan Judo, Queens, New York City
Sensei Takehito Ikezaki is a black belt holder with Shodan (1st degree) in Kodokan Judo. He embarked on his Judo journey at the tender age of four in Hokkaido, Japan, and continued training until his graduation from the Hakotede college national institute of Technology in 2012.
Through rigorous and lengthy training spanning over 20 years, he imbibed the spirit of “Seiryoku-Zenyo” (maximum efficient use of energy) and “Jita-Kyoei” (mutual prosperity), the principal teachings of Kano Jigoro Shihan, the founder of Judo.
His dedication culminated in a first-place win at a regional tournament in Hokkaido and a third-place victory in a national contest held by the Japan Association of KOSEN Federation in 2011.
In late 2019, in his late 20s, he came to New York for work, and in 2021, he embarked on a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu journey.

To ensure safety during Judo classes, we’ve implemented several measures. We use customized mats designed to soften the impact of throws and provide crash pads for nagekomi practice. Moreover, we place a strong emphasis on teaching proper break fall techniques to prevent injuries.

In our small class sizes, I provide personalized advice to students based on their skill levels and individual needs. Additionally, we offer video analysis with detailed instructions when necessary to facilitate learning.
Are there opportunities for competitions or belt advancements?
Yes, there are ample opportunities for both competitions and belt advancements in Judo. Competitions are regularly held in various cities and states. Belt promotions are available up to the blue belt rank and occur biannually, typically in April and October. Beyond the brown belt, promotions are based on students’ competition results and overall achievements in Judo.
What is the typical structure of a Judo class?
A typical Judo class consists of warm-up exercises to prepare the body, followed by drills to practice specific techniques, throws to apply these techniques, and sparring to apply learned skills in a controlled setting.
Do I offer trial classes for beginners?
Yes, we offer one free trial class for beginners. It’s a great way to get a feel for Judo before making any commitments.

What should you wear for your first Judo class, and do you need to buy a uniform (gi) right away?
For your first Judo class, I recommend wearing fitness shorts and a rash guard. Don’t worry about buying a gi right away; we have gis available for rent. Your first class is free, and afterward, it’s just $30.

No specific requirements are necessary for beginners. Our classes are tailored to your level, ensuring a comfortable learning experience.
