Brazilian jiu-jitsu is a complex martial art with many technical details, which is why a clear outline is necessary to help students progress. The Rocian Gracie Jr. Method breaks down the movements and techniques into manageable parts, allowing students to focus on what they need to know in order to advance. This approach also helps our instructors structure classes more effectively, allowing them to use the workbook as a guide to teach the course without losing focus.

History of Jiu-Jitsu

Jiu-Jitsu is a Japanese martial art that was developed over a thousand years ago. Its origins trace back to feudal Japan when samurais used hand-to-hand combat techniques to protect themselves during battles.

However, the Jiu-Jitsu we know today was influenced by masters Jigoro Kano and Mitsuyo Maeda. Jigoro Kano, a scholar of martial arts and the founder of Judo, realized the need to adapt traditional Jiu-Jitsu techniques to make them more efficient and safer for practitioners. This led him to create Judo, a discipline based on throws and immobilizations.

Mitsuyo Maeda, one of Jigoro Kano’s main disciples, became known as “Count Koma” and was responsible for bringing Jiu-Jitsu to Brazil. In 1914, he arrived in the country as part of a Japanese diplomatic mission and began teaching the art in the city of Belém, in the state of Pará.

Maeda found a great enthusiast of Jiu-Jitsu in Brazil: Carlos Gracie. Carlos and his family were influenced by the new martial art and started training intensely. Through extensive practice and adaptation of techniques, Carlos Gracie and his brothers, such as Hélio Gracie, developed Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, a version of Jiu-Jitsu that emphasized ground fighting and the use of levers and chokes.

In the late 1920s, Carlos Gracie challenged fighters from various disciplines to prove the effectiveness of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, winning fights against larger and stronger opponents. This helped popularize the martial art in Brazil and around the world, establishing Jiu-Jitsu’s reputation as an efficient self-defense technique.

Over time, Jiu-Jitsu spread throughout the world and gained more and more practitioners and competitors. Nowadays, it is one of the most popular martial arts and is practiced by both professional athletes and people seeking physical conditioning, discipline, and self-defense skills.
